Besides the staff that brought over the food they didn't say excuse me. Almost hit me in the face with the plate as they brought us our food. And rubbed my breast with their hand while clearing the table. I didn't say anything cuz I felt uncomfortable w the situation and didn't want to Cause a scene. Five stars go to the nice selection of beers and bottles. I expect to be greeted within the first 60 seconds of sitting at the bar, not glanced at 4 times, and ignored. After I finally got my drink, the service was okay, but it was not good or great. Apps, dinner was so yummy we were all very satisfied w our Experience.

In 1928, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement, the United States Congress voted Edison a special Medal of Honor. In 1929 the nation celebrated the golden jubilee of the incandescent light. The celebration culminated at a banquet honoring Edison given by Henry Ford at Greenfield Village, Ford's new American history museum, which included a complete restoration of the Menlo Park Laboratory. Attendees included President Herbert Hoover and many of the leading American scientists and inventors. The first great invention developed by Edison in Menlo Park was the tin foil phonograph.

In Anlauf Canyon, the government alleged that Edison power lines made contact with one another and ignited dry vegetation below. On Koenigstein Road, the federal litigation alleged that an Edison power pole transformer failed and caused an energized power line to fall to the ground, also igniting dry vegetation. The Thomas fire, which scorched more than 280,000 acres and destroyed more than 1,000 structures, ignited on Dec. 4, 2017, after high winds caused two Southern California Edison power lines to slap together, fire officials found.

In the company of such great people, this can be hard on children to fathom just how famous their father is; and may also have been a contributing factor to their early development. He was stubborn and self-made, a potent combination that often results in excessive self-pride, not easily admitting to mistakes.
Unlike iron ore mining, the heavy investment Edison made over ten years was repaid handsomely, and the storage battery eventually became Edison's most profitable product. Further, Edison's work paved the way for the modern alkaline battery. After opening the new laboratory, Edison began to work on the phonograph again, having set the project aside to develop the electric light in the late 1870s. By the 1890s, Edison began to manufacture phonographs for both home, and business use.

The ruling of United States v. Motion Picture Patents Co. in 1915 changed all this and provided the reprieve the industry had been seeking. The East Coast became suffocating for non-Edison-affiliated film makers. Every turn they made in the industry was met with a lawsuit, stifling creativity and stalling innovation. The environment that Edison concocted led to independent film makers wanting to get far away from him and his monopoly. Edison’s intimidation techniques even wandered outside the law on some occasions, according to Steven Bach’s book, Final Cut. The MPPC would hire mobsters to rough up film makers that were violating their patents.

Utility-sparked wildfires in recent years have devastated vast swaths of the state, killing people and destroying small towns in their wake. “This record settlement provides significant compensation to taxpayers for the extensive costs of fighting the Thomas fire and for the widespread damage to public lands,” First Assistant U.S. Atty. Hayley Smith is an environment reporter for the Los Angeles Times, where she covers the many ways climate change is reshaping life in California, including drought, floods, wildfires and deadly heat. The regulatory agency’s five-member committee approved the settlement agreement on a 4-1 vote, with Commissioner Darcie Houck voting in opposition, expressing hesitation about the new tool and a desire for more time and community involvement. Earlier this year, the California Department of Justice determined that Edison would not face criminal charges for its role in that blaze. It is considered the eighth-most destructive wildfire in California history.

To finance this work, Edison sold all his stock in General Electric. Despite ten years of work and millions of dollars spent on research and development, Edison was never able to make the process commercially practical, and lost all the money he had invested. This would have meant financial ruin had not Edison continued to develop the phonograph and motion pictures at the same time. As it was, Edison entered the new century still financially secure and ready to take on another challenge.

In the Security Pacific National Bank Collection at Los Angeles Public Library. The federal Atomic Energy Commission was willing to classify the Corral Canyon reactor as a nuclear power demonstration project. As such, the commission would pay up to $8 million for the design of the plant and would waive fuel-use charges of up to another $8.2 million. Due to a law passed in 2006 by the California legislature which forbid any new contracts for coal-fired power from any utility or municipality, the owners decided to repower the facility to burn natural gas. Forty-four thousand tons of steel were formed and welded into 14,800 feet of pipe varying from 8 1/2 to 30 feet in diameter. Each length of the largest pipe - 12 feet long, 30 feet in diameter, and 2 3/4 inches thick - was made from 3 steel plates, of such weight that only two plates could be shipped from the steel mill to the fabricating plant on one railroad car.
With Edison’s studio beginning to pump out the first silent movies in history, competition began to grow, causing him to react accordingly. Edison used what he is often most known for to deter competition and ensure that Black Maria maintained its supremacy — patents. In short, if you wanted to be in the movie business, you did so at the pleasure of Thomas Edison. The Company took to the courts to prevent the unauthorized use of everything from cameras to projectors — and in many cases, the films themselves. According to Steven Bach in his book (which could be an interesting gift for film lovers), the MPPC even went to the extreme “solution” of hiring mob-affiliated thugs to enforce the patents extra-judiciously.
Edison’s wife, Mary, died in August 1884, and in February 1886 he remarried Mirna Miller; they would have three children together. He built a large estate called Glenmont and a research laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey, with facilities including a machine shop, a library and buildings for metallurgy, chemistry and woodworking. More than a century after our power system was created, we still haven’t figured out how to send electricity from coast to coast. Thomas Edison’s stranglehold on the East Coast movie industry led to independent film makers wanting to get far away from him and his monopoly. “Edison Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze” (also known as “Fred Ott’s Sneeze”), filmed in 1894 at the Black Maria studio, was the first motion picture to be copyrighted in the United States.
He also had a role in the invention of the Kinetoscope, an early movie camera (although most of the work was done by William Kennedy Dickson, an employee of Edison). And during the late 1800s and into the 20th century, he held many of the patents over the technologies needed to create movies. In 1893, Edison’s workers built the world’s first film production studio, the Black Maria, on the grounds of Edison’s laboratories to make movies with the Kinetoscope. The technology required bright light, so the studio was built on a rotating platform with a window in the ceiling to capture as much sunlight as possible throughout the day.
During his stay in Louisville, it is said that he befriended newspaper editor, George Prentice, of the Louisville Journal. In addition to trying to teach himself Spanish, he developed a new style of penmanship. His intention was to write characters that were blunt and vertical, suppressing all curls and fancy loops -- a simple manuscript-print that was more legible and would quicken his speed as a telegraph operator. This cottage was built around 1850 and, as a shot-gun duplex, originally had a solid wall running down the center of the structure. Louisville's Thomas Edison House is located in historic Butchertown, a neighborhood which has been known as the center of meat production in this city for over 200 years.
Two such lengths of pipe welded together make one section weighing approximately 135 tons or, at intersections with the penstocks, as much as 186 tons. The dam's completion had a significant impact on Southern California and in particular Los Angeles, since the power generated by the dam contributed to more than 70% of the City's power needs at the time. In 1936, DWP bought the LA Gas and Electric Corporation and in 1937 assumed ownership of the Seal Beach steam plant. On March 18, 1917 the San Francisquito Power Plant No. 1, Unit 1 was placed in service and energy was delivered to Los Angeles over a newly constructed 115 kV transmission line. The 200 kilowatts generated by Unit 1 were the first commercial kilowatts generated by the Los Angeles Bureau of Power and Light (Click HERE to see more in Early Power Transmission). That company would later evolve into the LA Gas and Electric Corporation.
The three main components of the Intermountain Power Project are located primarily in Utah and California. The Generation Station is located near Lynndyl, Millard County, Utah. The first segment, consisting of two parallel 345-kV AC transmission lines, extends approximately 50 miles from the Generation Station to a switchyard located near Mona, Utah. The second segment, consisting of a single 230-kV AC transmission line, extends approximately 144 miles from the Generation Station to the Gonder Switchyard located eight miles north of Ely, Nevada. The powerplant consists of 17 main Francis turbine generators and two Pelton Waterwheel station service units (one for each plant wing). Built in 1917 and beginning operation on Dec 22 of that year, the reinforced concrete building was erected by the Bureau of Power and Light, located in Studio City near the corner of Diaz Avenue and Ventura Blvd along the Los Angeles River.
Today, visitors can enjoy light refreshments including locally made ice-cream and purchase unique books and gifts in the historic Ford Cottage Shoppe. In 1914, Henry and Clara Ford, along with their son Edsel, visited Fort Myers at the invitation of Thomas Edison. They enjoyed the visit so much that two years later, Ford purchased the home adjacent to the Edison Winter Estate.

Over the years, Mina became an ardent conservationist and bird watcher. The lovely estate is planted with tree, and shrub species from around the world, still a wonderful delight when the seasons change. The operating greenhouse still exists on the estate and contains some of the descendants of the original plants dating back to the time of Edison.

Mina also gave tirelessly to many civic, fraternal, educational, and religious groups in the community. She strongly believed that youth should be educated in the classic liberal tradition, in both the sciences and art. She herself an accomplished musician, tried to give this gift to her children. In our current efforts to achieve equality of the sexes, Mina would wonder what is taking so long. It was a partnership, as their adjoining desks in the upstairs living room attests. His rise from poor, uneducated railroad worker to one of the most famous men in the world made him a folk hero. Competitors soon emerged, notably Nikola Tesla, a proponent of alternating or AC current (as opposed to Edison’s direct or DC current). By 1889, AC current would come to dominate the field, and the Edison General Electric Co. merged with another company in 1892 to become General Electric. Though Edison’s early incandescent lighting systems had their problems, they were used in such acclaimed events as the Paris Lighting Exhibition in 1881 and the Crystal Palace in London in 1882. That same year, his work with the telegraph and telephone led him to invent the phonograph, which recorded sound as indentations on a sheet of paraffin-coated paper; when the paper was moved beneath a stylus, the sounds were reproduced.
Early Power Generation
In 1909 the Bureau of Los Angeles Aqueduct Power was created to build hydroelectric power plants along the Los Angeles Aqueduct. When Los Angeles acquired water rights in the Owens Valley section of Inyo County to construct the LA Aqueduct, it also obtained water-power sites along the way. He had received a deadline of December 1, 1882 to have the masts erected and electricity on.
Thomas A. Edison Middle School
This was Edison's first power plant located in the City of Los Angeles. The last experimental work of Edison's life was done at the request of Edison's good friends Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone in the late 1920s. They asked Edison to find an alternative source of rubber for use in automobile tires. The natural rubber used for tires up to that time came from the rubber tree, which does not grow in the United States. Crude rubber had to be imported and was becoming increasingly expensive.
The Ford’s sold The Mangoes in 1945 to a private family who then sold the estate to the City of Fort Myers in the late 1980s. Edison’s Study located behind the Moonlight Garden, was built in 1928 after Edison’s 1886 Electric Laboratory was moved to Henry Ford’s museum, Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. Visitors to the Edison and Ford Winter Estates will enjoy more than 20 acres of historical buildings and gardens including the 1928 Edison Botanical Research Laboratory. In August 1866, Edison and two fellow telegraphers left for New Orleans where they planned to board a steamer bound for Brazil. When they arrived there they found the waterway shut down because of a recent riot. Edison decided to return to Louisville where he took up residence at East Washington Street in fall 1866.

Edison began working at an early age, as most boys did at the time. At thirteen he took a job as a newsboy, selling newspapers and candy on the local railroad that ran through Port Huron to Detroit. He seems to have spent much of his free time reading scientific, and technical books, and also had the opportunity at this time to learn how to operate a telegraph. By the time he was sixteen, Edison was proficient enough to work as a telegrapher full time. The Ford Caretaker’s Cottage was originally a garage and caretakers’ residence.

This gave Edison the money he needed to set up his first small laboratory and manufacturing facility in Newark, New Jersey in 1871. During the next five years, Edison worked in Newark inventing and manufacturing devices that greatly improved the speed and efficiency of the telegraph.

Hassilev, now thoroughly in charge, kept the Limeliters going, replacing Yarbrough with tenors Red Grammer in the 1980s and Rick Dougherty in the 1990s, experimenting with country music before doubling back to their folk base. Eventually, Hassilev tired of running the studio and wound down his schedule. When the chance came to reunite the Limeliters as a part-time touring act in 1972, Hassilev, who now solely owned the rights to the group’s name, jumped at the chance. The old vocal chemistry was still there; the show drew highly positive reviews and big crowds. But the folk boom had long since deflated, and the Limeliters never could attract the same level of attention from record companies. Greenwich House Pottery has in-person and online classes available, encouraging students to learn new skills or refining techniques as a means to conceive, construct and realize ideas and share them with others.

Alice Wang’s first solo museum show in the US features glass works, ceramics, prints, and a film that trace her explorations into seemingly unnatural phenomena in the natural world. Drawing heavily from science, Wang swings from the micro to the macro, spanning molecular structures and the overwhelming abyss of space. Over six years, Wang documented sites in the American Southwest, Iceland, and the Arctic with similar landscapes as other planets, weaving footage of these “alien” sites with personal histories and drawing parallels between physical and psychological terrains. When Ras_G passed away unexpectedly in 2019, Los Angeles lost a beloved musician, producer, sonic scholar, and DJ who drew on a diverse range of inspirations including jazz, hip-hop, and Afrofuturism.

Starting with classes as part of a larger handicraft program in 1904, the Pottery officially became a department within Greenwich House in 1909. The teachers, students and residents that have worked in the Pottery’s classrooms over the years have included such renowned names as Peter Voulkos, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Betty Woodman, Ghada Amer, Ann Agee, Kathy Butterly, Simone Leigh and David Salle. Additionally, we appreciated the suggestion to relaunch an “advisory council,” and we plan to bring together a group of students and faculty that represent our various studios (wheel-throwing, handbuilding, and slipcasting) to offer regular feedback to our leadership team.

In 1917, the renowned architectural team, Delano & Aldrich, designed Greenwich House’s new headquarters at 27 Barrow Street. It was financed by Gertrude Payne Whitney, and the interior was decorated with hand-painted murals by famous artists, including Daniel Chester French, John Sloan, and James Fraser. Whitney established the Art School at Greenwich House before opening the Whitney Museum of Art. To support the growing arts program, Greenwich House established a Workshop Building at 16 Jones Street in 1928, and in 1948, the Pottery workshop took over, where it still operates today. While restrictions in Manhattan preclude gas kilns at the Chelsea annex, 16 Jones Street’s gas kilns predate those restrictions; the older facility also offers slip casting, wheel throwing and hand building. A pallet of raw clays is delivered weekly, with staff formulating them, not unlike an industrial bakery, into clay bodies that are hoisted throughout the building in buckets weighing up to 136kg via an exterior dumb waiter (underscoring the need for an elevator).

Dickey Betts, a founding member and guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band, died Thursday of cancer and COPD, his family announced. After becoming a hit act at San Francisco’s fabled hungry i nightclub only two months after their formation in 1959, the Limeliters became an inescapable presence in mass media. They recorded 13 albums, appeared on television and toured as many as 310 days out of the year.
From Greek vintage pithari to Spanish oil jars, these one-of-a-kind containers make beautiful statement pieces for the home and garden. While traveling throughout Europe, Eye of the Day has been fortunate to find old stone troughs. We have a variety of sizes and shapes, many of them hand carved from a single block of sandstone, limestone, granite or marble. Originally used as animal feeders or water troughs, they now lend themselves to becoming uniquely aged garden planters and water features. Eye of the Day works with top manufacturers to maintain a large inventory of terracotta pottery from Italy, France and Greece continually updated by regular container shipments arriving from Europe. Matthew Mandell of GFP represented the landlord in-house, while Corey Hight and Elliot Zelinger of Savitt Partners handled it for the tenant.
Curated by Nita Pettus and Amitis Motevalli, this show is an immersive tribute to the influential artist including music equipment, instruments, gadgets, art, books, films, clothing, and nearly 5,000 records lent by friends and family. The exhibition presents an intimate portrait of Ras_G while also showcasing his influences, collaborators, and the creative community he helped establish. The centerpiece of her solo show at Charlie James Gallery is “bajo el cielo sobre el mismo suelo” (2024), a 14-foot-long, multi-panel series of “soil paintings” that incorporates earth from along the US-Mexico border. Into the panels, Amézquita has carved disparate border scenes including a father and child walking along train tracks, a checkpoint with barbed wire and an American flag, and depictions of native plants and animals that flourish on both sides. Sanaa Gateja’s dazzling constructions are made from thousands of hand-made paper beads, which he sews onto sheets of bark cloth, creating compositions that mix abstract patterns and organic motifs.
Around the same time she signed up for a course with Sculpt Italy in Tuscany, Barnett applied for the program at Greenwich House, which is open to all artists or designers interested in working with clay. Founded in 1902 by the progressive social worker Mary Simkhovitch to help immigrants acclimatise to New York, Greenwich House comprises the pottery school, a music school, a nursery school, a methadone treatment clinic and four senior citizen centres. In the 1940s, the pottery school moved into the building at 16 Jones Street, which was originally constructed as a trade school for stone carvers. Founded in 1905, Greenwich House Music School was founded as a place for immigrant children and now provides music, art, and dance education for both children and adults.

Abused and neglected children lingered in bad situations. But Becky Santoro and her team at Foster Village Charlotte, a nonprofit that provides support for foster families, were prepared to act. In just the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region there are currently close to 600 kids in the foster care system. Over six months, they ramped up support groups, hosted meetings with the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services, and doubled the number of first-time donors. Seventy percent of our organization is run by individual donations. We’re trying to show that everybody can impact foster care, not just foster parents.

After a consultation, a follow-up email is provided that recaps the visit and suggests play-based strategies for the sensory tools that will be delivered. One of the things that brought us together was our mutual desire to support children in foster care.

When Foster Village Charlotte joined Cultivate in 2020, they were an emerging organization that had a groundswell of grassroots support, an ambitious vision and deep passion for local children and families. The FVC team had recently moved into a Center that would serve as a home for their support groups, Welcome Pack storage and space for foster families and biological families to work together to support the children in their care. At Foster Village Charlotte (FVC), the commitment to providing a supportive space for children and foster families goes beyond the ordinary. FVC facilitates connections, offers educational and emotional support, and equips caregivers with essential advocacy tools. My vision has always been for Foster Village to be a safe haven for kids to come back to over and over again, one that’s comfortable and dignifying for their families.

We also found out that our foster daughter’s biological brother was born and needed a home. But then, during a court meeting, the judge decided that the baby would live with an aunt and uncle. Support during the Resource Development module turned out to be particularly helpful for the organization. “During our time in Cultivate, we launched a peer-to-peer campaign that would leverage this groundswell of support.
Foster Village Charlotte knew where they wanted to go – but they also knew they needed help to build a strong foundation that would make them sustainable for years to come. “When we joined Cultivate, we had a lot of momentum and community support,” said Founder and Executive Director Becky Santoro. We recently hired a licensed clinical social worker. We also launched a “before your first placement” group. At the end of four weeks, new foster parents have an opportunity to partner with a seasoned foster parent mentor to walk them through their first placement.
One hour after that call, we got another call about a child who needed a home. Your support gives vulnerable children and families the village of support they need to thrive. Foster Village bridges this gap between foster families and caregivers and those who want to help, meeting practical needs and providing holistic support beyond the system. As children and caregivers navigate a messy child welfare system, our volunteers help bridge gaps and remind families that they are not alone through the ups and downs of foster care.
